Control Zed Project
It's no secret that globalisation has undermined the soul and cultural fabric of people all around the world. It affects almost everyone who doesn't live in the United States.
Those who call the last letter of the alphabet Zed and not Zee have been often involuntarily bundled in with the "American way" of doing things.
When it comes to aggressive and disruptive things the US government and influential American businessmen do, the list is increasingly long and well-known. Nonetheless, the cult of silence about the increasingly dystopian American vision of the future persists (not least in professional settings).
A suspiciously selective subsetting of free speech...
Technology - and the internet - has accelerated this cultural backsliding.
But never forget - it also holds the keys to breaking the cycle.
Instead of a defeatist mentality - silent complicity while muttering there's nothing we can do - we should pay attention to the incredibly powerful tools available to us.
The internet and the browser still follow open standards. Google Chrome holds a monopoly on the browser and it has been trying to close the door behind it, but it won't succeed. It is far from the first browser to have the lion share of users.
And while AI is a huge threat, there may well be opportunities to use it against itself to counter its side effects.
The Control Zed Project is a project that seeks to use technology to cancel out (and potentially even reverse) many of the consequences of the American technological and commercial influence.

Ideas include:
-
Fixing rigged recommendation algorithms that seem to favour American:
- content creators
- products and brands
- search results
- Providing (community-driven) notes when you are on a vested interest pro-US bias
- Auto-filling AI initial prompt with a template (e.g. to tell it to respond in your dialect or with metric etc)
- Settings to opt-out of parts of American culture and the news cycle that you're just not interested in (e.g. NFL, Awards ceremonies, US politics)
- Providing inline context about brands and companies to indicate where the company's owners are from
- Creating an alternative to Google Translate and DeepL which provides full support for English dialects
- Android Keyboard with better English dialect and locale support (i.e. better autocomplete and a localised GIF selector - no dead US talk-show memes in sight)
